My daughter just came home holding her hand behind her back and said, “Poppy, I have a surprise for you! Close your eyes!” I closed my eyes…and then opened them again 20 seconds later when it became clear that she didn’t understand the intricacies of surprise protocol. Then she whipped her hand out from behind her back to present me with a single leaf. “I brought it to you from outside!” she announced proudly.
